Musical Director Orlando Jopling writes:

In this concert we are thrilled to be performing one of the major British works of the 20th Century: Vaughan Williams' 5th Symphony in D. A 70 year-old composes a hymn to humanity in the midst of brutality of World War II, a vast canvas depicting the positive side of human nature: a great well of solace in a time of turmoil and high stress.

This is complemented by Elgar's great cello concerto, one of the most enduring and popular pieces of classical music. Poignant and spiritual, yearning for the world of pre-war Britain, and lost love. Played by young cellist James Barralet - don't miss the opportunity to hear this incredibly talented and intelligent musician - he only graduated 2 years ago and has already recorded his first CD and is in demand all over Europe. "A truly great cellist, moreover, a great musician." Benjamin Zander

38 year old Orlando Jopling, whose grandfather was a godson of Vaughan Williams, has conducted the Kew Sinfonia for 7 years.
